Unlike a lot of the five-year olds of these days, I was often seen kicking, punching and throwing teddy bears around the sitting room with a Bruce Lee film playing in the background. The older I became, the more Martial Arts schools I joined, learning the likes of Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do. As a child I saw Martial Arts as something that would impress my friends and evoke fear from bullies at school. As an adult, I perceive self-defence as a vital skill, both as a father and protector of my family and household, and as an individual in a world which, by what we see on the news, is getting more dangerous and violent.
