Advantages: His descriptions of even the most mundane make fascinating reading
Disadvantages: Maybe too crude for some at times
Possibly my favourite author of all time. Bukowski takes the rudest and crudest but describes it with such perception and sensitivity that it becomes less so.
His brutal honesty makes for fascinating reading. His description of even the most mundane events, thoughts or feelings is just captivating. Whether it's his novels, his poetry, his letters or his readings, they all have an incredible depth yet are so easy to devour.
I would recommend starting with his post office, women, etc trilogy and move from there. They are so accessible and allow you to fall in love with his alter ego 'hank chinaski'.
Alternatively, another good starting place is in his childhood with 'ham on rye'. His four volume collection of letters is easy to work through (letter by letter) and lets you in on his personal life, not just 'hank's. a literary genius of no comparison.
Good if you like: John Fante, Henry Miller, Ernest Hemingway
Summary: Not one to miss.

- 02/06/09 Haha - yes he is a little chauvanistic and sometimes a little crude for a 'lady' but I think he's incredible. I'm looking forward to having a proper think before I sit down and review some of his books.
If you like him then I can REALLY recommend John Fante to you. Bukowski was actually one of his biggest fans and said that he took a lot of influence from him. |
