Buried - Mark Billingham ... of the British crime writing fraternity should cause no one any surprise. His secret (as his latest book, Buried, comprehensively proves) is simple: Billingham's work is always utterly reliable, delivering gritty and authoritative crime fiction writing in which the sense of locale is always spot-on. Here, DI Tom Thorne is asked to help in the case of a teenage boy who has disappeared. He is the son of a once high-ranking police officer (now retired), and Thorne’s first endeavour is to ask the father, ex DCI-Mullen, to draw up a list of all those in his past who might have reason to hold a grudge. But then Thorne discovers that there is an omission from the list: a man who has made serious threats to Mullen and his family. And as Billingham's beleaguered hero strains every sinew to track down the boy before he is killed, he has to find out why his ex-police colleague has lied to him.

Newest Review: ... against him from when he was with the police. Mr Mullen leaves a name off the list that DI Thorne is not happy about. ... more

... Especially as the person left off the list threatened to get even with Mr Mullen. Add to the mix, that Luke is then kidnapped again, before he has even been found, and a probable race hate sexual assault and murder, and you have all the ingredients for a thrilling ride. My Views *************** This is the first time that I have ever read anything by Mark Billingham and to be honest, to start with I found it hard getting to grips with his style of writing. The prologue describes an argument between a man and a woman, with ...more

Rating:

The Story **************** Luke Mullen has been kidnapped and he was last seen getting into a car with an older woman. Luke's father is an ex high ranking police officer who knows that the longer Luke is missing, the less likely it is that he will be found alive. Unusually the kidnappers have not contacted the parents to demand anything for his release. Then the Mullens receive a video tape showing their son, eyes wide with terror as a man moves towards him holding a syringe. DI Thorne who usually works only murder cases is asked to help out the kidnap unit, or rather he has no choice much to his displeasure. Thorne first asks Mr Mullen to make a list of ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Dig Deep (1681 words)

Having read all of Billingham’s books I was keen to get my hands on his latest book ‘Buried’ for a long time. I kept looking out for it in my library but it’s clearly a popular book and I’ve only just been able to get it even though it’s been out in hardback since May last year (for those of you interested the paperback is out this June). After loving all of his last attempts I was convinced that this was going to be a page-turner and I’d finish it in no time at all. The book opens with a prologue, which had me hooked and wondering what relevance it had to what I read on the back of the book. It’s only short but it shows an argument between a man and a woman. ...  Read the complete review
