... published about 100 years on from the fiercest and most wide ranging point of the struggle, it is probably the last time that these stories could be written down with much authority. Tales from the times were still in circulation being told by the children and grandchildren of those that took part. The stories still had a strong oral thread back to those times. As the generation’s move on and the nature of the Native American lifestyle moves with it these stories, if not written down, would be lost to the realms of ...more

Express Review on Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee - Dee Brown
by TJ - written on 08/12/08
Rating:

This book is the sorrowful tale of broken promises and lies.
The land west of the Mississippi was reserved for the Indians. When gold was found, the boundaries were moved at will by the new Americans. It's interesting that a battle
won by Indians was called a massacre, and a war won by the
white men was called a victory. The Indians were moved around and moved around. They were forced on small pieces of unfarmable land. When they were given large acreages in the Dakotas, it was swiftly and deftly taken away when Gold was found. This went on until all of the Indians gave up out of shear lack of HOPE. A very sad story, but more truth than
the Television ever brought to us.

We all know how the “west” was won. It’s been the subject of so many films and TV shows that its impossible that anyone doesn’t know the stories. Civilized white settlers moving out of the east of the recently formed United States of America, tamed the wild lands and the wild natives that threatened their peaceful ways. These native Americans, as we term them these days were thieves and murderers living a primitive lifestyle had to be overcome by the US military in order to ensure the peace in a land that was theirs by right of Manifest Destiny, basically God’s will. Okay, I’m probably doing most of the readers and injustice to think that many people still hold that kind ...  Read the complete review

Good grief I've had trouble with this one. How long have you got? Not long enough I fear. Do you speed-read? No? Oops. 'Cos I've done it again. I have to get serious now, already, because we're on a serious book. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee is it. Do you know how the American West was won? Do you even think the American West was won? Because, for a lot of people, it wasn't won at all - it was lost. This is the story told by Dee Brown, it's the story of the people for whom the West was lost. It's the story of the American Indian peoples. (I'm saying Indian, not Native American because that is the term used by Dee Brown. ...  Read the complete review

The historical accuracy is 100% correct. Humour. Re-readability. The drawings by Will Steig are also funny Cuppy died long-before he ever finished the book, ad so we may have been deprived of much much more.

Introduction to ancient Egypt through an interesting theoretical base.. Names can become quite confusing, making the story sometimes harder to follow.

Detailed, uses views of other historians too Perhaps not long enough
