Advantages: A popular character and lovely illustrations.
Disadvantages: No lift the flap opportunities.
This is one in a series of books in the 'Little Kipper' range by Mick Inkpen, aimed at very young children.
~ The Content ~
The book's main character is the very popular, Kipper. In this book, Kipper is trying to catch a butterfly that has landed on his friend, Pig's lolly but it quickly flies away.
Then begins a chase of the butterfly as it lands on a lilac bush and a baby's purple balloon which Kipper ends up popping to the astonishment of the baby!
Kipper then realises that all of the things that the butterfly is landing on are purple so ingeniously he makes a pointed purple hat and puts it on Pig..... The plan works as the butterfly lands on the hat, Kipper catches it and later on, lets it go.
~ Format and Illustrations ~
This is a short book, 8 double pages with quite a lot of text on some of the pages as the story unfolds.
Given that this range of books is aimed at very young children, it doesn't really encourage any active participation in the form of any repetitive text that they can join in with.
It introduces two colours: blue and purple but I feel that it could have been made a lot more toddler friendly had it offered some lift the flap opportunities when the butterfly lands on the different objects.
The illustrations go some way to compensating for this. They are all set against a white back drop and as always, Mick Inkpen has portrayed the differing expressions on the faces of the characters, in particular, Kipper as the penny finally drops that he could make something purple to attract the butterfly.

~Overall ~
A lovely, simple book for young children and any Kipper fans but when comparing this to other more recent children's publications it certainly isn't as appealing or educational in comparison.
Thanks for reading.

Summary: A lovely book but there are better on the market for the very young!

- 23/03/09 Kipper is always a favourite with most children...my own two however weren't huge fans themselves...they did like the books but didn't normally ask for more than one read of them..much preferring others over it. x |

- 19/03/09 We had all of these when my daughter was tiny - they are great :-) |
