C++ How To Program is an excellent introduction for beginning C++ programmers. I used it as my first year text at university and well, it helped get me through their exams so it has to be pretty good doesn't it? Trust me, it does.

The first five chapters are based on the fundamentals of C++ programming, dealing with control structures, functions, arrays and pointers whilst introducing the basic concepts behind structured program design. Later chapters deal with the building blocks of C++, i.e. object oriented programming techniques (OOP) and continue to develop the language.

This book is excellent for beginner programmers as it explains things clearly and concisely whilst giving plenty of example code (which anyone learning programming will tell you is essential for a good understanding of the language). It is one of the best books that I have read of its kind and although some knowledge of the language C may be required to gain a fuller appreciation of the earlier chapters and the benefits of OOP it is not completely necessary.

If all this is mumbo-jumbo to you as you have no intention of learning a programming language then I apologise. If you do wish to learn the language and it still makes no sense then with this book, I promise that it will. Do not be fooled into the claims made by the '...for dummies' series of programming books which say they can teach you C++, because they do not teach you enough to be of any use. What they teach throughout their entire book 'C++ Programming for dummies' for example, is covered in the first 2 or 3 chapters of this book...and its covered better as well! If you want detailed coverage in an easy to understand format then this is the book for you.
