Advantages: Easy to use

Disadvantages: Well, it's still Latin, isn't it!

This is honestly the best textbook out there if you want to start learning Latin. It's been a couple of years since I stopped taking the subject, but I still remember quite a lot, and I think it's due to the quality of these books. They start you off nice and easily, with simple sentences, and then progress to stories about Caecilius and his family. It guides you through grammar and explains it in a simple way, which is really good, because we're not really used to thinking about how you should use the dative or pluperfect in English.

At the end of every couple of chapters there's a section on Roman Life, which I found really interesting, and I think it helps for children to see the culture that went along with the language. Also helpful is the website, which has a vocab tester which you can set to varying levels, and other activities (including a "Goo Caecilius's face!" game. Not sure of the educational value, but fun nevertheless!) Altogether, if you're planning on taking up Latin, make sure you use this course, it's one of the best out there.

Summary: A good beginners' book
