Advantages: Good story, believeable characters, easy to read
Disadvantages: Probably not going to teach you anything new
For some reason, lately, I am quite enjoying girlie books. I normally borrow my books from my Dad but obviously my Dad doesn't read girlie books so my most recent read was borrowed from my friend. She has a while collection of books written by Sophie Kinsella and said that this one was her favourite and told me to have a read.
About Sophie Kinsella
Sophie Kinsella's real name is Madeline Wickham and she was born on 12th December 1969. She has written a series of books which are based around a shopaholic. These books include: The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic Abroad, Shopaholic Ties the Knot, Shopaholic and Sister and lastly Shopaholic and Baby.
Can You Keep A Secret
Firstly, the cover of the book looks very girly. It is a lilac colour with the name of the author and the title of the book written across the front. There is a picture on the front of the book which is a cartoon character (female) who is stood with her back to the audience. She is stood within a purple snow globe which is surrounded by silver stars.
Characters
Emma
Emma is the main character of the book and she narrates the entire story. Emma is one half of 'the perfect couple' with her boyfriend Connor and they are just about to move in together. Emma lives in a bit of a dream world, always thinking that something big is going to happen to her and is always waiting for it to happen. She works for The Panther Cooperation which is a company that sells a cola type drink. Emma is your typical female in her twenties, with lots of little secrets which she slowly reveals throughout the book.
Connor
As I already mentioned Connor is Emma's boyfriend. He works at the same company as Emma and is very serious about his career. Everyone tells Emma and Connor that they are the perfect couple but their personalities are extremely different and you quite often get the impression that Emma is embarrassed by Connor and the way he is always trying to suck up to people at work.
Lissy
Lissy is Emma's best friend who she has known for over 20 years. Lissy currently lives with Emma and their other housemate Jemima. Lissy is a solicitor and is always on hand to offer advice to Emma when everything goes wrong!
Kerry
Kerry is Emma's cousin who has lived with Emma and her Mum and Dad ever since her own mother died when she was a teenager. Kerry always seems to be favoured by Emma's parents and Emma always feels like she is second best to Kerry. Kerry has made a real success of her life, set up her own company and generally has a brilliant life and she always likes to rub Emma's face in it. In my opinion, there is nothing likeable about Kerry.
Jack
Jack is a multi-millionaire who owns The Panther Cooperation. Emma and Jack meet by chance on a plane journey which is to change both their lives forever.
The Story
Emma's life changes forever when she finds herself on a rough plane journey. In her panic and thinking that she is going to die and that the plane is going to crash starts to tell all her secrets to a total stranger who is sat next to her during the flight. However, it soon becomes apparent that this guy is not a total stranger and that he is going to have a big impact on Emma's life, just like she will on his.
My Opinion
I have to admit (once again) that I thoroughly enjoyed reading another girlie book. This is the first book of Sophie Kinsella's that I have read and I really liked her writing style. I felt that I could really relate to the main character Emma and pretty much all the situations on the book were realistic. I like the fact that Emma narrates the books and you get a feel for exactly what goes through the head of a 20 year old girl. There are lots of different emotions that you feel throughout the book but one reoccurring theme was that of laughter, some part of the book made me laugh out loud. 100% recommended.
Summary: A good girlie book
