Advantages: A well written master piece, Really plays with your emotions Disadvantages: Some people have found it difficult to get in to.
With a long and somewhat boring train journey ahead of me, I decided I would read this book, which i had borrowed of my Mum. I had read about three pages and I found I could not put it down. The book is about a young Greek girl and her father who have to dea with Italian Occupation, German occupation and Earthquakes. It examines the struggles that people can face during war, and shows what the power of love can do. I have now read this book about 7 times and still find it as entertaining as when I first read it. I am a sensitive person at the best of times, but this novel has got to me more than any previous novel. I love the writing style, the content and the humour. The vivid descriptions of it's setting Cephalonia in the Ionian Island, Greece have made me want to go there more than anything, de Bernieres has captured in words the beauty of a place which cannormally only be transferred through pictures. I thouroughly recommend this to anyone who has not had the chance to read it yet. It is a beautiful, well written and emotional novel. Summary: |
