Readers who are familiar just with Peter Carey’s serious award-winning historical fiction like Oscar and Lucinda and Jack Maggs might find these strange, playful and sinister pieces of work something of a shock. His collections of short stories published in Britain as The Fat Man in History are the earliest, least well known and most untypical of his work, though in my opinion they are the best. And though not in print anymore they are well worth tracking down through second hand book shops.
