Advantages: entertaining, can lose weight, carol vorderman
Disadvantages: flatulence, cost, very hard
There have been so many different diet and fitness fads in our house through the years (food combining, the F Plan, Rosemary Conely etc mostly instigated by my mum), it was interesting to see if Ms Vorderman would offer anything different. Before you raise an eyebrow .... no I didnt buy it just to see Carol Vorderman. Her personal transformation provided the perfect advertisment for the diet which promised health, vitality, and a completely new shape as well as weight loss. It was quite an entertaining video to watch, taking you day by day through 3 different women's experiences on the diet showing you the downs as well as the ups, and the end results. You actually find yourself feeling sorry for them. I began to wonder if I was suffering from female hormones from eating too many carrots. I'm pleased to say im still all here though [although this pink nail polish really suits me] I'M JOKING!!! The idea is that for 28 days you flush all the toxins out of your system by only eating easily digestable foods. This means no: meat, dairy products, processed foods, wheat, sugar, alchohol, tea or coffee. To be frank, life would be barely worth living after day 3!! So I let my sister lead the way. She stuck with it like a fly to a windscreen and lost half a stone. This has come back however - and brought a few mates!! Which I think is probably always going to be the case with diets that you only stick to for a limited period. Not only that, but you (and your family) have to put up with terrible wind, headaches and moodiness. And believe me my sister has some flatulence! Country air never appealed to me. To be fair, the video doesn't claim it's going to be easy, and one of the testers has a really hard time on the diet which gives you some indication of what it's going to be like. But they all claim at the end that they loved it and speak of some mysterious 'deeper cleanse' that they're going to try. Carol
does claim that everyone can afford this diet which I don't really agree with. If you want to eat anything other than lettuce you need to go the healthfood shop and start buying things like rice milk and wheat free bread, which cost twice as much for half the amount of normal products. You are also instructed in the video to take Spirulina, Udos oil and kelp - which will set you back about another £25!! Added to this is the fact that Carol doesn't actually give you any recipes. My sister ended up buying several other books to try and find meals that I could eat. Sorry I mean that she can eat! Having said all that I have picked up some good habits from the video - I cut down on the 'bad foods' wherever I can. I wouldn't really recommend it though unless you're a hardened dieter looking for a bit of punishment!! (although i think my sister enjoyed the flatulence) p.s. after clipping me round the head sister has given her seal of approval though the apple she stuck in my mouth makes me wonder. Some added info here that might be useful. My sister said she broke out in spots and lacked energy whilst on the diet. She stuck to it for a month and thinks if she could have managed 2 months she may have seen improvements. The spots does sound like detoxification working, things often get worse before they get better. Every individual is different. I always benefit from detox, we are a healthy eating family anyway so the effects on us may not be as pronounced and as quick as on others. Healthy eating is common sense though, it's just being able to overlook that nice chocolate cake and biscuit munching. Not easy.

- 25/05/01 I think the detox is a great way of preventing illness but in our society it takes a bit of will power, unfortunately cakes and chocolate are too tempting at the moment. Help..Carol.. |

- 19/05/01 Carol Vorderman seems to be losing her knack with figures claiming that this diet is affordable to all. |
