Spy Who Came In From the Cold - John Le Carre

Rating:
assignment, a devious plan designed to result in the death of the powerful head of East German intelligence. Leamas agrees... I d heard a lot about John Le Carre, and seen many of his books in the library and bookshops. His name seems to be synonymous with the spy novel, and so when I found this early book in a charity shop, I just had to buy it. I wasn t disappointed. The book is very tightly written. It s a short book, weighing in at just over 200 pages, but there s a lot of plot packed into those pages. Very little words are wasted on long description and narrative, but Le Carre still manages to convey very well the bleakness of the espionage business and the cold ...

The Constant Gardener Just for a change I thought it was too long in places. Some authors, Ellroy, Donleavy Le Carre I can keep going with till the cows come home. This latest effort, out now, in luggable hardback for a bargain £15.00 should keep most people going for a week, and as such is very good value for money. What disappointed me was that so little of it seemed to be infused with that Le Carre page turning quality which was there to savour in full in Single and Single and The Tailor of Panama his two previous efforts. The plot, pay attention Bond .... junior old Etonian diplomat in one of the least worst African postings, manages to lose his wife to the ...

The Constant Gardener - John Le Carre

Rating:
This is why I so highly anticipated the arrival of this book - a purchase I had intended to make for some time, and was well over-due! John LeCarre has created another reserved, respectable British civil servant who turns his life around after a tragedy. In Nairobi, career diplomat Justin Quayle has just learned that his very political wife, Tessa, was brutally murdered at nearby Lake Turkana. Much younger and more actively involved than Justin, Tessa was with Belgian-African Doctor Arnold Bluhm but he was not found and is the chief suspect. Not usually involved in his wife’s investigations, Justin searches her notes, records, and computer disks and finds a link ...
