Rating:

Advantages: Well-paced with a satisfying climax

Disadvantages: Sometimes overshadowed by the film

This was Stephen King's first published novel, and it rapidly kick-started his phenomenally successful career. It's also notable for being rather shorter than most of his later novels, since he had not yet developed his occasional habit of over-writing!

The text of the story is interspersed with fake newspaper stories, which relate the aftermath of the events of the story.

This novel begins as a painful coming-of-age tale, as teenage Carrie struggles to be accepted by the in-crowd at her High School, despite a home background (religious maniac mother) which prevents her having anything like a normal life. Children can be cruel, and teenagers especially so, and the torments inflicted on the hapless Carrie by her peers set up the reader for the very satisfying sequence where Carrie's hitherto latent telekinetic powers are dramatically unleashed in an orgy of destruction.

Made into an excellent film by Brian de Palma, "Carrie" remains an excellent debut by Stephen King.
