Perhaps it's because I have a Psychology degree - on the other hand, maybe I'm just plain nosy - but I have to admit to being a huge fan of 'fly on the wall' documentaries.I love the insights they provide on what makes people tick, on how they live their lives behind doors which normally remain firmly closed. So, for me, the television series Castaway 2000 looked set to become compuslsive viewing from day one. For anyone who managed to avoid watching the TV series last year (and also avoid the numerous newspaper headlines it generated) the prgramme was billed as a unique experiment in social psychology. If you enjoyed the TV series, you will certainly enjoy this book. However, do not really expect "the full inside story" as the front cover suggests. For a start, the story ends in October to allow for the publishing process! Secondly, the material in the book is derived from interviews with the castaways and from access to their diaries and letters, but in fact there is not an awful lot that we have not already seen on our screens. The rather lengthy book (382 pages) begins with the conception of the programme idea, and outlines briefly some details of the selection process.
