'The Cat Who Could Read Backwards' is the first of Lilian Jackson Braun's 'The Cat Who...' series. It introduces Jim Qwilleran (the spelling is right!), a successful crime journalist who wrecked his career and marriage with a drink habit. Determined to get back on track, he takes a job as an art writer and ends up tracking down a murderer with the help of a feline companion Koko. The twists in the tale are clever and do keep you reading, but, as with all the books in this series, the actual mystery is less important than the characters and their relationships.
