Advantages: best book ever
Disadvantages: prepare for severe depression
I use to listen to a late night radio show on talk sport called Tommy Boyd, and i remember somebody rang in and asked about if he knew any good books to read, and he recommemended the Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger. Immediatly i wrote down the name and the next day used my 4 month old book voucher from xmas to buy it... and it is probably the best novel i have ever bought. I had absolutly no idea what the book was about except that Greenday wrote a song about it and the man who shot John Lennon read it. And from the first page on the busride home; to the last page not wanting the book to end i was addicted. It took me to a place i had never been, and a style of life i could not imagine. The agony you feel and pain and admiration you feel ties you in with the character Holden Caufield who is one of the most sadistic characters i have come across. I only wish i had the chance to study this novel in a classroom situation because the story is so well written and dealt with you feel like Holden, and you feel as with every move you make with him you are making the desicions, even though looking back how foolish and ignorent he was. For those who haven't read the book i would skip to the last paragraph of the opinion because i would not want to spoil the book for you. My favorite running story along the novel has to be anytime he is drinking, especially his knowledge of bars. Its exceptionally great when he tries to but alcohol at the hotel and he is refused so he points at his grey hair. I like the way when he describes people he is so innacurate about their character when we meet them, it shows such nievity. The lowest part of the book that depressed me the most was the prostitute part in the hotel, how he was taken for a ride by the pimp and had nothing to show for it. The plot is about a teenage boy who attends a boarding school. His name is Holden Caufield. He is a mild mannered polite person who feels little hate f
or anyone. Well he doesnt do to well in his classes and this is about the 4th or 5th school he has attended. Anyway he receives the news he is going to be sent home in a few days because of his poor performence, so he decides he doesn't particularly want to hang around at the school so he decides to stay in the city for a few days then make his own way home. Its then that he doesnt so much embark on an adventure but he just does a few things like goes on a date, or meets up with friends and relatives. But the way it is written makes you feel like you are with him every step of the way. The language used in the book i found a little hard to follow because of its use of America language, that was the only difficulties i had with the novel. Anyway in summary this is without a shadow of a doubt my favorite book ever, and if you havent read it please take the time to as it will change your thinking, despite its total irrelevance to our time, thinking and lives. coolhand
