Advantages: Great illustrations, Fun story

Disadvantages: Having to read it again & again!!

This book is part of the Dorling Kindersley Share-A-Story series. This means that at the beginning of the book there are a couple of pages with hints and tips on how to get the best out of the book when reading it to your child. Also at the end of the book there are a couple of pages with some suggestions on activities that you could do with your child related to the story i.e. making butterfly pictures or looking in your garden/park for the animals mentioned in the story.

There are 3 other books in the Share-A-Story series and they are:- Nigel's Numberless World by Lucy Coats; Not Now, Mrs Wolf! by Shen Roddie and Are You Spring? by Caroline Pitcher.

The Caterpillar That Roared is a story about a caterpillar called Hugo. Hugo isn't like other caterpillars as when he grows up he wants to be a lion. When he wakes every morning he checks to see if he's turned into a lion and he practices being a lion. He practices growling and one day decides to try it out on his neighbours.

He tries it out on 3 neighbours: Winona the Snail, Ollie the Spider and Ruby the Tortoise. They all laugh at him because they can see that he isn't really a lion. Hugo goes and practices down by the river and scares an unsuspecting Ferdinand the Fish who thinks Hugo really is a lion!!

When Hugo realises that he's frightened Ferdinand, he's horrified and comes to the conclusion that if he really were a lion, he'd have no friends as they'd all be scared of him. He decides that he's glad he's a caterpillar after all.

This story is aimed at 3 years upwards and the moral is that it's OK to just be yourself. The story itself is only 24 pages long and has a few sentences on each page. The main feature of the pages are the excellent illstrations. They cover the whole page; are bright and colourful and look like they've been painted on. There's lots of fun with the actual text. With lots of bold, bigger
fonts and curved sentences, so it looks really interesting.

My 3 year old son absolutely loves this book and at the moment we have to read it to him every day.

I can't tell you how much this book cost, as I got it through a book club at a much reduced rate, but you can look it up at the DK website at www.dk.com.

This book (and the others in the series which we have as well) are excellent value and your child will love it.
