Advantages: eminently readable

Disadvantages: annoying habits

J V Jones is rapidly making a name for herself in the science fantasy genre. Cavern of Black Ice is the first of her new trilogy and has been out in paperback for some months now.

For anyone familiar with the Robert Jordan type or the David / Leigh Eddings books this has a similar feel. The story is reasonably well paced, the major characters are well formed but there are loose strings in the story or minor themes that just don't fit.

What makes her writing different? She has a quirk of writing about 'bodily functions'. As a female writer she feels permitted to write about urination, defecation, that's pissing and shitting to normal folks, womens menstrual cycles and to insert odd characters to introduce 'comic relief'.

If this sounds as though I'm carping, I'm not. I read Cavern of Black Ice and thouroughly enjoyed it and am now waiting for the next volume.

On a scale of :-

0 = I'd have to be on the payroll to read it

to

10 = I liked it so much I read it in one go and felt it
was better than sex

I'd rate it at 6 - 7

I thought Cavern of Black Ice could almost be about the time of Attila the Hun with a splash of Magic and lets face it they didn't have flushable toilets in them days.
A good read, like most I will be getting the next installment when it comes out.
Not a bad Op!!! - :o)

I didn't buy this until quite recently, but I really liked it!

I couldn't get into this book at all. I love all JV Jones' earlier work though, so maybe I'll try again when the next one is published.
