Sometimes science-fiction is anything but fantasy. Over the past twenty years, the number of books within this genre that focus on a dangerously altered future Earth form has increased in huge numbers. Perhaps it’s the rise of terrorism and the threat of nuclear warfare that makes a vision of a post-apocalyptic world suddenly so interesting. Personally, I find these kind of novels enjoyable simply because they are so infinitely possible - at the rate we’re burning our fossil fuels and polluting the atmosphere, it isn’t too far fetched to believe that at some point in the near future, planet Earth could be facing a catastrophe.
