... blurb on the book the quote by the Guardian summed it up for me "Younger readers will delight in the drama of Donaldson's vivacious rhyming text and the panache of Scheffler's illustrations.". The story starts with Charlie Cook sitting on a sofa reading a book. The text is rhyming, and has a steady beat to it that makes my kids sometimes sing it like a song. Each double page spread is about a particular book, the book is described as being ABOUT what and another book will be mentioned in it. The next page w...more

Premium Review Charlie Cook's Favourite Book - Julia Donaldson: Charlie and his book of books (515 words)
by - written on 12/03/09 (Very useful, 142 readings)
Rating:

My 2 1/2 year old was recently given this as a gift by a friend. Though she likes it being read to her it looks like it's for a slightly higher age group as my 6 year old read it and found it quite fascinating too. It is a hardcover board book in the style of toddler books but with a more "grown up" look and feel to the text. The cover is intriguing enough as it shows a picture of a boy reading a book on a sofa, outside in the garden, surrounded by a crocodile, bear, pirate, knight, frog and parrot looking at him with interest. And the book he is holding in turn has the same picture on its cover. The book is written by Julia Donaldson ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Forget Charlie Cook, this is my daughter's favourite book! (738 words)

I was initially attracted by the bright and humerous illustrations and as I had heard good things about Julia Donaldson's stories and this book, in mint condition was on sale for a criminally ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Charlie Cook's Favourite Book - Julia Donaldson: What's Your Favourite Book? (594 words)
by - written on 24/07/07 (Very useful, 100 readings)
Rating:

This is another one of Julia Donaldson's outstanding children's picture books, but perhaps less well known than the Gruffalo, which is a shame as it's a very good book which children between 4 - 7 can enjoy and even older! ~ Julia Donaldson ~ Julia Donaldson began her career writing songs for children's television. In 1993 one of her songs 'A squash and A Squeeze' was made in to a book. Since then she has written over 40 books and is probably best known for 'The Gruffalo' which won three major British Book Awards. Other books by her include: * Monkey Puzzle * The Gruffalo * Fox's Socks * Postman Bear * ...  Read the complete review
