Advantages: a happy ending
Disadvantages: none
Written in the early 1990's for Mills and Boon, this is one of Nora's earlier works that has just been reprinted. It forms part of a quartet of books called The Donovan Legacy. This is part 3 and follows Anastasia Donovan and Boone Sawyer, but can still be read as a standalone novel. (I have not read parts 1 and 2).
Ana, as she is known, is a witch from a long line of magical people hailing from Ireland, but now living in Monterey California, close to her cousins Morgana and Sebastian, both also witches with different gifts. Ana's gift is empathy and healing, and by 'linking' with people she feels their pain and helps to cure them. She is also a qualified herbalist and creates potions and herbal remedies which she sells in her cousin's shop. She is reluctant to tell people of her gift, since she had a bad experience with a man a few years previously.
Boone, a widower, is a writer of fairytales who moves next door to Ana, with his six year old daughter in tow. For someone who writes about fairytales he is very scathing of magic and does not believe it really exists. Both of them are instantly attracted to each other, but both are hesitant over starting a relationship due to their past experiences and concern for Boone's daughter.
When their relationship develops Ana has to tell Boone about her abilities, but before she can her skills are revealed in a dramatic accident.
Of course this being Nora Roberts you know that there will be a happy ending, but this is a well thought out book and the characters are interesting and believable. Her idea of witches, magic and Ireland, is a common theme which has featured in some of her later (much better) novels, but this is still a very enjoyable read.
