Advantages: surprises in every corner!
Disadvantages: the book may be hard to find, i borrowed it from a public library
This was one of Alcott's earliest novels but it was deemed to be too provocative and daring, hence was never printed in her lifetime. The novel has now been editted and published but still retains the original work of Alcott. The story is about Rosamond Vivien, a young girl who has been living all her life in recluse with her grandfather in the coast of England. Rose is very passionate, lively and daring, she yearns to see the world and to be free to her hearts content. Her dreams come true when one night, they are visited by an old friend of her grandfather, Phillip Tempest. He soon falls in love with Rose and tempts her to start a life full of adventure, sailing around Europe. What follows was a carefree life until one day Rose discovers the truth about Phillip. She cunningly escapes and the story then focuses on 'the chase' that develops as Phillip, unable to forget his beloved Rose, chases her from one place to another. Each chapter is full of surprises, that it held me sitting right at the edge of my seat all the time. The setting in each chapter as Rose and Phillip wander around Europe is also wonderfully described. Rose is a wonderful and one of the most intelligent heroines that I have come across. The character of Phillip is equally powerful, clever and witty. This is a great story of obsessive love and the consequences are tragic indeed.

- 29/12/00 You have almost tempted me to find and read this book - but not quite. The fact that it may be difficult to find warrants a bit more detail and information to make me go to the effort. But it is difficult to know how much information to give in a book review without giving too much away isn't it? |
