Chasing Darkness is the eleventh novel to feature wise-cracking "World's Greatest Detective" Elvis Cole and sees him becoming involved in a murder investigation after somebody he once helped clear is once more implicated in a series of murders!
It's fire season in Los Angeles and whilst local authorities are helping citizens leave their homes during a bush fire, they stumble across the body of a suicide, Elliot Martin, who died holding a photo album full of treasured memories. Except these treasured memories are actually photos that depict the victims of a series of unsolved murders that have occurred over a number of years! Elvis Cole becomes involved because it was evidence he uncovered that once cleared Martin of a murder accusation. Now Cole has to ask himself did he clear a killer only to give him a chance to go out and kill again? Certainly the LAPD think that may be the case rendering him pretty much persona non grata!
With time running out and with the case rapidly becoming more complicated the further it progresses, Cole sets out to discover the truth for the families' of the victims! But there appears to be a conspiracy of silence emerging amongst the ranks and soon Cole finds himself in much deeper water than he anticipated!!
Crais is a master of the P.I thriller and his Elvis Cole novels have so far proved to be both exceptional and very well written. Chasing Darkness is no exception and pulls you in right from the get-go and quickly sweeps you up in its engaging plot. Once again silent partner, Joe Pike, is present to lend a hand (fresh from his recent solo novels) and helps make this a tense, action-packed thriller that never lets up for a second!
Few writers are able to write with the conviction that Crais manages and with this, he once more proves he is at the top of his game! You don't need to have read any of the other novels to enjoy this either so it is a great book for established and newer fans to pick up alike!
If you love Elvis Cole then you are going to love this! This is classic P.I fiction from a master story-teller!
