We have all heard of the shortage of nurses in the news, but truth be told, its all old hat. There has always been a shortage of nurses, and during the early 1940's to late 1960's, a series was published to try to help combat it. Writer Helen Wells conceived the series Cherry Ames, following a young woman who decides to become a nurse, to achieving her her qualification,and then using the shortage to her advantage by travelling to exciting places and having adventures. The idea was to appeal to young women and have them consider a job in nursing, making them see the exciting opportunities they could take as opposed to the traditional bed pan and shift work drudgery ...
