Advantages: Good for readers and non-readers
Disadvantages: Nothing
We borrowed this book from the library but I may have to see if I can get my own copy as I think it is a great book to encourage young ones to start reading.
The story starts with Hungry Seal asking "where's the meal?" "It's coming now", says busy cow. Each page goes on to introduce another animal asking something that rhymes with their name. "Macaroni!" says Shetland Pony. "Too hot for me", says chimpanzee.
This acrries on until the last of the animals suggests cleaning up, but lazy sheep says "No Let's........sleep!"
The final page shows all the animals snuggled up under a blanket on the sofa.
Thw ryhming text and short length of the sentences makes this really easy to read aloud to young children, or an excellent book for young children to read aloud to parents. My son struggles with his reading amongst other things so I encourage him to try and read whenever he can and this has proved to be one that he can manage well on his own which feels like a good achievement.
The illustrations are great too because there is only one animal on every page and the text matches that animal, so everything is really clear. My daughter also really enjoyed going through all the animals on the sofa at the end and remembering their names - like lazy sheep and greedy goose.
This is a great little story and only takes a few minutes to read, a little longer if you talk about it as you go through, but it makes a perfect bedtime read.
Summary: RECOMMENDED xx

- 16/08/08 To me it does not sound like Donaldson's most inspired tale. I prefer the stuff she does with Schleffer (sp?). A good book of poems by her is "Wriggle and roar" BTW. |
