Citizen of the Galaxy - Robert A. Heinlein

citizen of the galaxy is an emotional insight into the life of Thorby. He was a slave who was bought and eventually freed by a crippled old soldier/spy. When his friend dies he then started on an emotional journey of self discovery, at first with a trading family and then as a recruit in the army. When he does find out who he really is he then has to face a whole new series of challenges. This was without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read.
