Advantages: Great change of tack from Grisham
Disadvantages: None really
The Client is the 4th novel from the award winning legal thriller author John Grisham. This was adapted into a film, and examines the seedy underworld associated with the American legal system.
The Plot
A young boy, Mark Sway, inadvertently witnesses the suicide of a mob boss. He turns to a lawyer, Reggie Love, to protect him so he does not have to be a witness for the District Attorney, a man who wants to mob so badly he will put anyone in danger to get them. Tensions run high as the mob and the courts have a tussle with Mark in the middle.
My Opinion
Grisham takes a slightly different tack here in comparison to his previous novels. The tussle going on in this novel is between two factions of the law: the District Attorney's office and a private lawyer. The protection of a minor is handled very well by Grisham, and the fear of the mafia is also handled with the necessary levity to create an atmosphere of caution and anticipation. Throughout the book, I found it very hard to put down, and turned pages constantly when I probably should have been doing something more practical like the washing up, shopping or sleeping!!
Conclusion
This is a very good tale, not in the norm for John Grisham, but still with its twists and turns and clever ending.
I rate this book at 4 stars out of 5.
The book is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.49.
