Details: Clinical Medicine - edited by Parveen Kumar and Michael Clarke (fourth edition). Published by W.B. Saunders Priced at around £32 ISBN 0-7020-2019-2 Why should you buy this book? Well, if you are a member of the public then there is no reason at all. However, if you are a medical student, or student of any of the healthcare faculties, then this book could be of immense benefit to you. Many different books will be recommended to you by different people. But, for an alround medical textbook, there will be few who will disagree that Kumar and Clarke (the name everyone knows it by) is the mother of all books. The ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review mosby crash course (168 words)

I doscovered these books while panic buying in the book shop during the weeks leading up to the finals. Reasonably priced, and clearly illustrated, these books give a good amount of information for the undergraduate. Of course, for the written exams it is probably best to use one of the larger textbooks to refer to for additional information, but these books make the huge subjects of medicine and surgery more managable. i would suggest that these books are particularly good in preparation for clinical exmas...the chapters at the front focus on various presentations of illness, differential diagnoses, and appropriate investigations. Each chapter is not ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Clinical Medicine Books in general: Mosby Crash Course (164 words)
by - written on 28/03/01 (Useful, 20 readings)

These books are fantastic. They basically just cut all the waffle and get down to what is important. The best bit about them is the way that they are set out. By having the first section on the presentation of various conditions, the books tailor themselves perfectly to modern medicine curriculums which are now taught in a symptom based manner. They tell you how to initially investigate various problems also. Later chapters deal with examinations and then finally some actual detail about the conditoins themselves which although being brief, are probably adequate. I would say that if you are aiming for merits/distinctions then they are probably not the way to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Learning by Osmosis (219 words)

I have always been a great believer in investing money in books rather than investing time in work. This ethos seems to do little in aiding my knowledge base but seems to do wonders for relieving the enormous guilt I feel for missing a morning of lectures or an 8am ward round. It is only now as I am in the autumn of my days as a medical student that I can see the error of my ways! These books were supposed to supplement rather than substitute my learning! I cannot pass judgement on the Mosby series as they seem to have passed me by altogether. However it is the 'at a glance' series that I have found invaluable. Whole lectures are confined to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Clinical Medicine Books in general: Nice to revise, but don't use these as your only text bo ... (124 words)

The Mosby Crash Course guides in most of the medical disiplines are consise and to the point. I have 'Nervous System and Special Sences' as well as 'Cardiology' and have found both really helpful to supplement my end of year revision. But when trying to use the texts in my own self- assisted learning, I have found them to be very much lacking in sufficient detail to make satisfactory notes. They do make nice cheap revision guides, at £16 they are the cheapest medical books that you can find. But you pay for what you get. Do not be swayed by the price-you will have to fork out more for a good neuroscience or cardiology text book. Or you could use the ...  Read the complete review
