from Prague airport - where the threat of a long flight with nothing but the inflight magazine for reading pleasure was looming large - introduced me to the pleasures of Stephen Dobyns' writing. No, the book wasn't the one I'm reviewing now, rather it was his relatively well-known Boy in the Water. At the time I wanted something not too complicated, but possibly intriguing. I'm happy to report that I found just that in Boy in the Water - a highly-suggestive thriller verging on the chiller - the Time Out verdict, "Stephen King with a PhD", couldn't have been apter. Jim Hawthorne is the new head of Bishop`s Hill Academy. The school is in trouble and he has pledged to save it, not knowing that there is something evil going on. A boy is found dead, but as time goes on, it is too late to stop the terrible madness. When I read `The Church Of Dead Girls` by this author, it swiftly became one of my favourite ever novels. I did not think it was possible for him to beat it and on reading this novel, I have to say that whilst he came very close, he just could not quite manage it. His characters are excellent. He paints a superb picture of the tortured Hawthorne and he creates a real air of mystery around his characters, with LeBrun being a ...
