in the past. I read them so long ago that I can t remember the stories, but I do remember being impressed, which is why I picked this book up. Carson McCullers has an interesting background. By the age of 31, she had suffered from a series of strokes and was completely paralysed down one side of the body. For years, she could only use one finger to type, yet she managed to make a successful career out of writing. This story is about the life of a 12 year old girl, Frankie, whose brother is about to get married. Strangely unhappy with her life in the town where she lives, although not really aware why, she plans to leave with her brother and his wife to go on a round ...

The marriage was not a success and they divorced. They continued to keep in touch and subsequently remarried, separating finally in 1953; he later committed suicide.” The blurb goes on to list Carson’s works with their background information, but, given that McCullers lived until 1967, I found the standard Penguin précis incredibly sparse and disappointing, so set off to do a little research of my own. The Ballad of the Sad Cafe - Carson McCullers
by jamworld - written on 01/07/00 (Very useful, 451 readings)
Rating:
The short novel or novella or whatever you're supposed to call it can be an awkward style, in that it is not quite as grand a publication as big thick novel, nor as concise an exercise in brevity as a short story. However, several titles written in this style are redoutable classics. This is one of them. It is the deeply atmospheric tale of a small, Deep South town, and in particular of one of its most notable, yet least approachable residents, Miss Amelia. Miss Amelia owns a store in the town, and is one the wealthiest inhabitants but keeps herself very much to herself, especially after an unhappy and turbulent ten day marriage. That is until the ...
