With over three hundred species of bird living or visiting these islands, the novice birdwatcher is in for a challenging time in trying to identify every bird he or she comes across. Birdwatching is becoming ever more popular as a hobby; perhaps because it's cheap and healthy (combining birdwatching with a long walk in a beautiful area is a really lovely way to work off some calories!). It is relatively easy to get to know the birds that live in one's 'local patch' but (as everyone knows!) birds can fly which means they can and do turn up almost anywhere.
