The Lake District is England's highest mountainous area and is a region of extremes. England's highest mountains are here, as well as its largest and deepest lakes. The region has the highest rainfall, and unfortunately, receives the least sunlight of anywhere in the country. The mountainous, volcanic terrain has produced a landscape of outstanding natural beauty with a huge variety of landscapes and habitats; it's no wonder that Lakeland is regarded as England's finest walking area.
