Regular watchers of cricket at the County Ground in Northampton will remember that Marcus Trescothick once scored 284 there in 2007.

Followers of the sport will also be aware, though, that such highlights for Trescothick on the field were always offset by his depression away from it.

The story, of 'engulfing black periods' set against the backdrop of huge sporting success - Trescothick won the Ashes with England in 2005 - is told to ghost writer Peter Hayter, who as a confidant of the player during his darkest times, is perfectly placed to chronicle his depression.

The book, which won last year's coveted William Hill Sports Book of the Year, is a clear departure from the rank and file of sports biography, and in terms of quality is light years ahead of the sanitised vanity projects which dominate the genre.

It is honest, brutally honest, but it is also brilliant, and will grip the reader from the first page to the last, regardless of your interest in cricket.
