This is an excellent book if you’ve got children.

The first thing I noticed about it is that it is the symptom you look up, rather than the name of the illness itself. I’ve spent hours in the past trawling through medical books when one of my kids has been ill. But with this book you look up the actual symptom, e.g. rash, fever, headache, tummy ache, etc. Symptoms are listed alphabetically.

Under each symptom there are various sections – a description of the symptom itself, ideas of what it might mean, advice on what to do, home treatment, whether or not to call the doctor and what the doctor is likely to do.

In fact there is also a very useful section called ‘Should your child see the doctor’, which I have looked at countless time. It lists symptoms that could potentially be serious and shouldn’t be ignored, such as a different cry, a sunken fontanel, etc. Like many Mums I often genuinely don’t know whether I should take my child to the doctor or not. This book has been so handy as a first port of call, and to get some idea of what I’m dealing with!

Good recommendation. It's surprising how little preparation parents are given on such matters.
