... economy defies scientific understanding and prediction. Most social problems are the same, there are simply too many variables, too many unexpected events for them to be amenable to scientific explanation. Complexity takes a different approach, and it forces us to view the world differently. Rather than reduce a problem it accepts that the world is meesy and unpredictable. A central idea of complexity theory is that behaviour emerges from the interaction of many components. An economy is an example of a complex system, ...more

Premium Review Complexity - M. Mitchell Waldrop: Life changing! (397 words)

Rating:

The main thrust of science in the last three or four hundred years has been reductionist. You take a phenomenon, strip away any extraneous details, anything messy and unmanageable and, applying a good dose of maths, create a theory to explain and predict. It works of course, science has progressed enormously and we see the fruits of science in applications all around us. However this focus on reducing a theory doen to its bare essentials means that for the most part science is no good at dealing with many real world problems. An example is the economy. Even with the enormous computing power at our disposal, and with reams of mathematical formalisms, the economy ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Complexity - The Emerging Science at the Edge of Chaos (318 words)

However, all of these things have in common the fact that they are complex systems in which the interaction of the component parts results in the emergence of global properties, structure and organisation. Highly complex objects such as eyes, kidneys, flowers and galaxies arise by means of this interaction in a general process that is termed self-organisation. The book very naturally addresses highly profound questions such as: ...  Read the complete review

Fascinating introduction. Short and confined to Europe.

Filled with original and thought provoking ideas, contageous enthusiasm, well written. A rather one-sided account that would have benefited from more self-criticism.

Doorway to an infinite world. Wells could have written much, much more and still only scratched the surface.

The Baloney Detection Kit!, clearly and powerfully argued, widely ranging Perhaps just a little intolerant at times

really clear, "efficient" textbook you'll probably spend a fortune buying other books in the areas of interest that it sparks

Good coverage of all topics, good value for money. Can be sketchy in specific areas.
