I am studying for my GCSE’s and I absolutely adore English, especially creative and descriptive writing. I think that Catherine Cookson is an inspirational writer. So far I have only read ‘A Dinner of Herbs’ but I already want to read more. I find her writing style very enchanting and interesting. I understand that Cookson writes mainly about 19th Century England. This, in conjunction with the great way she writes about the lower and middle classes, makes a unique reading experience. She is one of my favourite writers as she tells the story of various women from their point of view. I find it most interesting how different life was for a woman at that time. However, the emotions of love and hate have never changed over the centuries. Catherine Cookson sets many of her Novels in Newcastle and the surrounding area, from where she herself hails. Her stories also mainly concern rural England and in particular, the working class. I adore the way she captures the fiery spirits of many of her characters and also the kind natures of many of the men who are often portrayed as monsters in similar stories. ‘A Dinner of Herbs’ is a wonderful story about two generations of a family and the highs and lows of their lives. Mary Ellen is in love with her friend Roddy, however, her love is unrequited. Despite that, Mary Ellen persuades Roddy to make love to her before he leaves to begin a career as an artist in the city. She is left on her own carrying his baby and is rejected by her father and her employer. Roddy’s guardian, Kate, takes in Mary Ellen to begin a whole new life… I would defiantly recommend ‘A Dinner of Herbs’ and I am resolved to read more of Catherine Cookson’s work.
