Advantages: A deep plot, great description, full on action
Disadvantages: military java is hard to understand for newcomers
This is the second book in the bestselling series of military novels from Andy Mcnab who is himself Ex SAS. This gives Mcnab great insight into the military world which reflects well in his books. The main character, Nick Stone, is an Ex SAS man himself. He now works for an intelligence firm. He is constantly haunted by the tragic death of one of his friends and his family, all of them perished apart from his youngest daughter who is now Nick's foster child. In this book we see Nick drawn into a world of international terrorism and a plan to assasinate the president of the United States and an Arab leader. The book starts with Nick being dropped into Syria to capture a member of Binladens Alkaida network and retrieve some important data. In order to retrieve the data a specialist is called in. She is called Sarah Greenwood, she is a women that Andy is infactuated with. The mission fails when Sarah kills the man that they were supposed to be capturing, but all is not lost, she manages to retrieve the data. This is a mission that will come back to haunt Nick for a very long time. A few years later Andy is sent on a mission to assasinate the very same women, he is forced, yet again, to question his orders. After taking on a house full of terrorists with a crossbow(which is rather humorous) he finds Sarah. She claims that she was being held there against her will and was not collaborating with the terrorists. Andy has to make a hasty descision, kill her or go against his firm, the authority's and save her from her fate. Not a descision to be made lightly. All the way through this book we see the usual brilliant descriptive skills that Mcnab has. This is very useful in understanding the situations Nick finds himself in. This book has a fantastic plot with many twists and one big one at the end, sixth sense style! There's plenty of action scenes which is always a good thing and their well spread out as well. You will always
find yourself wondering what will happen next, you'll never be able to stop reading, you'll always want to turn to the next page. You are left on the edge of your seat many times and there's certainly never a dull moment. There's alot of military java to get to grips with if your a newcomer to these kind of books but Mcnab explains things in simple terms providing an easy read. There's plenty of suspense, humor and most of all action to get your teeth into. Mcnab's done it again in his usual style!
