When I was 17 and reading everything in sight this was recommended to me. I admit that it wasn't until about 100 pages in that I became fully hooked, but from then on I couldn't put it down. Including when I went to school, as I was caught reading it under my desk by my English teacher! In hindsight, 17 was perhaps a bit young for the amount of "romance" included, but I didn't mind at the time! This book is what made me want to go to Scotland. I have never found another book that made me feel like I was actually there, seeing everything as the characters see it. Cross Stitch Diana Gabaldon There is nothing I like more than a good time travel novel. Except maybe a time travel novel that has great swathes of romance throughout it. I'm one of those people who can easily suspend my belief to follow a character through "time portals" into the world as it was a hundred years ago, without getting too much involved with cause and effect - you know, the whole butterfly effect thing where tampering even the tiniest bit with the past can irrevocably change the future. Nope, give me a good time travel novel, a nice comfy sofa, a roaring fire, a cup of Heinz Tomato soup and a toasted bagel (in that order, please) ... Read the complete review
