I discovered The White Dragon in my high school library. After reading it, I was fascinated with the thoughts of dragons living on a world, where no technology exsisted. The White Dragon got started my love of Scifi/Fantasy which still goes on strong to this day, 23 years ago. I would recommend anyone who's a dragon fan to get a copy of this book to read. Centuries ago, humans colonised a planet called Pern. In these centuries genetically-engineered creatures called Dragons (due to their similarity to the mythical creatures of earth) were developed to combat an unthinking but deadly enemy called Thread, which fell towards Pern from a nearby planet termed the "Red Star" every 200 years or so. to a different part of Pern. This book can be read idependently of the others - as the story, I feel, stands ok by itself. But fans of Anne McCaffrey's work will want to read as much as they can about Pern, her dragons and their riders! Ms McCaffrey develops her characters well, giving them depth and believability. I think it is very clever the way that she has tied all the loose ends together e.g. providing explantions for the stories and objects that have been passed down through the generations. Sometimes you, the reader, are able to guess what is coming next, while at other times the explanation leaves you breathless!! I am always left wanting more when I ...
