Advantages: good story, good characters, good twist at the end

Disadvantages: a bit slow sometimes

When I picked this book off the shelf I had no idea what lay in store. The story revolves around a family pet which contracts rabies and becomes a monster. I was surprised at the way in which King makes the dog almost human, by explaining its thoughts as the rabies get a hold of him. For example,as the dog gets sicker, he wonders why he is so angry with his master all of a sudden, why so thirsty, why so tired. I have never seen this done with an animal in literature, and found it a very interesting aspect.

The deaths in this book are vicious but not so bad you get nightmares (although i am now loath to pat a strange dog!)

The end of the book is the worst part for me - I won't spoil it for you, but I will tell you I cried so hard I had to put the book down for a bit. I am a bit of a softie, but I think most people would feel a bit heartbroken at the end of this. But be warned, the end is a twist in the story, and quite unexpected!

On the whole, I think King has done an excellent job with this book, although the movie was not a patch on the book. If you have seen the movie, please don't let that put you off - this is a really good read.
