Advantages: good food, easy to follow

Pat Chapman, the founder of the curry club in 1982 has a passion for curries and has written several recipe books to help other curry lovers. I own one of these books the Indian Restaurant Book.

I have enjoyed Indian style cooking for many years and I used to be able to go out for meals at the local restaurant, I progressed onto takeaways but I now cook my own!

On my bookshelf I have lots of books with curries in but I have found that a lot of them are very complicated and the ingredients are hard to find and expensive. The most unusual ingredients in this book are the spices, which are readily available from the supermarket.

This cookery book has all the explanation I could need. It tells me how to use and store spices. What equipment is essential in Indian cookery, all of which is available in most kitchens. How to rectify disasters, we all make mistakes at times.

Basic cooking Techniques are covered with different spice mixes for different curries, basic cooking methods and even how to make ghee a regularly used cooking fat in Indian cookery.

Before each recipe is a simple explanation with where recipes come from, what to serve it with and what the recipe is like. The recipes are well laid out and easy to follow. The instructions are very clear and easy to understand.

The book is divided up into

Soups Snacks and Starters
Barbecues, Grills and Tandoori
Meat and Poultry Curries
Fish and Seafood Curries
Non-meat Curries
Lentil, Rice and Bread
Accompaniments
Sweets, Desserts and Beverages

I find this book very easy to use and since I have started using it for our curry nights, which are most Thursdays I have, had no complaints just lots of compliments. You need never feel a fool when faced with the name of an Indian dish or ingredient as there is a comprehensive glossary in the back of the book, very useful. I can produce a mean meal with this book. My favourit
e recipe has to be Baigan Burta an Roast Aubergine Curry, I do like Aubergines. Pass the drink please!
