... why have I made all this fuss about this cookery book and why are second hand copies so expensive on Amazon? The DBHC was first published in the 60s by the milk marketing board, reprinted in the 70s for metrication and then again twice in the 90s due to popular demand. It's a very traditional cookbook starting with soups, then mains and so on through to preserves and drinks. Prior to the recipes there is a 40 page ish section of useful information. Now you probably won't use this section much but there is plenty of...more

Premium Review The Dairy Book of Home Cookery - Clark Gellings: a must-have cookery book in my opinion (369 words)
by - written on 27/04/09 (Very useful, 84 readings)
Rating:

My Mum seemed to have more cookery books than Waterstones & although I'm not quite as bad as she was I must admit I have far too many for my needs. I rarely get the opportunity these days to cook lavish meals as the family is always out & about but I'm reluctant to part with any of my precious books & the one I would defintitely never give away is my Dairy Book of Home Cookery. I've had this for years now & it's so great for basic cookery recipes. It's a 'no-frills', easy to access, clearly written & fail-proof gem of a book & I'd recommend it to people leaving home, getting married or even experienced cooks. The ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review No odd ingredients here - a true classic cookbook (673 words)
by - written on 04/10/09 (Very useful, 63 readings)

Having moved into my own place and enjoying (at least every now and again) cooking new things from scratch I'd built up quite a collection of cookery books from Chinese to Rick Stein via biscuits and muffins. But it wasn't long before I realised something was missing from my bookshelf - I could do amazing, exotic things with lamb but couldn't find a recipe for a basic moussaka and not one of my books seemed to acknowledge the existence of the humble Victoria Sponge. What I needed was The Dairy Book of Home Cookery(DBHC), a book which I had used at my mum's hundreds of times. Getting my mum to part with her copy was impossible; I believe the latest edition had been ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Dairy Book of Home Cookery - Clark Gellings: A Kitchen must have (333 words)
by - written on 24/05/09 (Very useful, 25 readings)

This is the one cook book that every one should own. Its a kitchen must have. My Mum had this cook book as i was growing up and it was a favourite in the kitchen. My mums copy is well used and it shows. When i was old enough my mum bought me and my sister a copy of The Dairy Book of Home Cookery each. The contents are great and broken down into easy to follow blocks. Firstly it starts with useful information. Theres weights and measures for cooks, notes on recipes, using a microwave oven, dairy products such as milk, all the different cheeses and how to store them. It shows you how to choose the best cuts of beef, lamb, pork and has a guide to fish ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Num Num Num! (361 words)

I'm not really in to fancypants cookery. All of this Jamie Oliver stuff - a pinch of this, arrangements to make it all look delicate and pretty... it's all just a bit too fancy for me. I like food, I like cookery, and I like mucking about in the kitchen, but what I enjoy more are recipes I can grasp the basics of and then alter as I wish, recipes that help me use up leftovers, and recipes that are in general very simple. This means I steer clear of all the Delia Smith and Jamie Oliver stuff and go for older books - seventies and eighties is generally perfect. I snatched this up for 50p on a car boot sale and I think it's going to become one of my more used ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Dairy Book of Home Cookery - Clark Gellings: Back to basics (185 words)
by - written on 29/09/00 (Useful, 264 readings)
Rating:

This is a basic cookbook & deserves it's place in any kitchen. These days most of us buy things ready made & the art of basic cookery has gone out of the window. Times change & so do cooking habits. I learnt to cook from my mother & at school but over the years the advent of many ready prepared dishes at the supermarket & lack of time due to work commitments means I rarely "cook", it then becomes necessary to own a basic cookbook. Forgetting the quantities or ratio's for lets say batter send me straight to this book. All the basic recipes are covered like cakes, batters, sauces as well as timings for different meats along with oven temperatures. Meat ...  Read the complete review
