There is something about a good bit of romantic fiction that works wonders for the soul, I feel. Boy meets girl, boy likes girl, girl likes boy, everything is dandy till fate throws a spanner or other such obstacle in their path, all hell breaks loose, they fight the good fight together to make good, and are finally reunited in a glow of romantic-ness (I know, I made that word up, but you’ll have to let me off on that. It’s a good word. Very descriptive!) Mills and Boon here we come. Except that Nora Roberts is no Mills and Boons read – her characters are well thought out and researched, her plot is never cumbersome and plodding, and though you hope it will all work out okay in the end, you’re never really all that sure exactly how it will all get to that glowing happy ending. I’ve read quite a few Nora Roberts novels in the past – I actually bought a new one on Sunday which I’m almost done with (2 novels in one book – I’ll review it at a later date!), and that is one of the real plus points about her writing. It’s easy to get through a novel in a day and a half if you put your mind (and your time) to it. Her stories flow so well that you find you’re halfway through and haven’t even had a second cup of coffee yet! And by that point, you’re so engrossed you keep putting off the second cup of coffee until you find that low and behold, the happy ending is upon you and you’re finished!

This one is no different. The characters? Three witches. Yes girls, Witches! Wise women who can make things move with their minds and all that jazz. I love a good witch story! The place? Three Sisters Island – and the plot. Well, pure genius. The old “bring out an old legend to air for a while and find out that history is repeating itself” malarkey always works for me. The island suffers a terrible curse that can only be broken by the descendants of the original three sisters (who lived there in 1692…) the only question is – what is the curse and how, exactly are they going to break it. And will they….or won’t they….?

This is the first of a trilogy of stories, dealing with each “witch” in turn. The main character in the first is Nell, who is running so hard away from her past and an abusive husband that she has to try hard to remember how to stand still in one place for a while. She is a born cook – a kitchen witch – and she develops her love for this culinary art throughout the novel. She also falls in love….

Dance upon the Air is my favourite novel in the trilogy – maybe because I love cooking too, I’m not sure, but some of the descriptions are so vivid, so mouth watering, they make me want to run to my teeny kitchen and morph into a vague version of Nigella. I also love the fragility of Nell, and the growth she has as a character to this strong person she’s always been. It’s a book which reminds me a lot of the film Sleeping with the Enemy, though the plot really isn’t anything like it, the story still carries some of the same undercurrents as the film, and I find that really interesting.

If you’re looking for a book for the dark nights, this is it. It keeps you on your toes as far as plot lines are concerned, and the descriptive qualities are so rich that as soon as you open the book, you fall helplessly into the world that Nora Roberts has created. She’s a very skilled writer, and I can thoroughly recommend this book to all!
