Advantages: A unique take on the vampire genre
Disadvantages: It ends! I could have read on forever!
This is the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by RITA award winning author J R Ward.
The series falls within the paranormal romance genre and revolves around vampires.
The first thing that really caught my attention about this book was that J R Ward has managed to create something unique in a genre where I thought I had read pretty much all there was to read. J R Ward presents vampires as something quite different from the traditional view of them, although they do have some of the key characteristics we associate with vampires such as being unable to go out in sunlight.
The main characters in this book are Wrath, the king of the vampires and the last remaining pure blood vampire in the world, and Beth Randall, who is the half human, half vampire daughter of Wrath's brother-in-arms Darius. Darius is killed within the first couple of pages of the book and leaves Beth, who has no knowledge of the vampire world to the protection of Wrath.
The story follows them from their initial, passionate meeting, as their relationship develops and they each come to terms with their own personal demons whilst all the while the war between vampires and the sinister Lessening Society, which exists solely to kill vampires, continues to be fought. At one point turning painfully close to home for Wrath.
I rarely buy books, I just tend to borrow them from my local library, but I enjoyed this book so much that I went out and bought the whole series! The books are just so readable and can be read over and over again without loosing any of their charm or appeal.
Summary: If you like romance, paranormal or something unique then this is a must read
