Dark Mountain has a lot in common with Darkness Tell Us, and I feel that Laymon may have written the latter in an attempt to improve on this one. Dark Mountain is not a bad book, but considering what Laymon is capable of, it's a little disappointing. It was originally written under the pseudonym of Richard Kelly, with the title of "Tread Softly", which suggests to me that Laymon knew it wasn't one of his best. It's the story of two families camping in the mountains who are terrorized by a couple of very strange (and decidedly evil) characters.
