... Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but that remains - and will continue to do so, perhaps forever - the absolute pinnacle of all comedic science fiction writing. The story revolves around Dom Salabos, a character soon to take on a very important role on his home planet. When an assassination attempt prevents him from taking on that role, Dom finds himself unwittingly taking on an even greater role - but one that is so enormous that he can't actually see it. Premium Review The Dark Side of the Sun - Terry Pratchett: Comedy sci-fi at... nearly its best (1029 words)
by - written on 16/06/05 (Very useful, 91 readings)
Rating:

First off, apologies to all the non-Pratchett fans out there as I'm bombarding you with yet another TP review! (Of course you don't have to read it! :-P) Also, I have to say I'm surprised at the lack of enthusiasm for this book in the reviews already on the site, and the fact that many people seem to prefer Pratchett's earlier sci-fi work, "Strata", to this one. Oh well different strokes and all that, here's what I thought of this book... Best known for his Discworld novels and an acknowledged master of the fantasy humour genre, Terry Pratchett has in fact had a couple of brief forays into the world of science fiction humour, too. The first ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Not A Good Example! (199 words)

Rating:

Although I am a great fan of Terry Pratchett, I am afraid that this book has to be one of the worst he has ever written. It is not, unfortunately, part of the brilliant Disc World series and, as such, does just not compare. I struggled to get through this book and was actually relieved when I reached the final page. Normally I race through any of Pratchett's books and feel disappointed at the end simply because I have finished such a great novel and have to wait for the next one to hit the book shops. If you have never read any of his books and would like to try one, please do not make it this one. All his other books are ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Dark Side of the Sun - Terry Pratchett: Whats the probability of u reading this?? (134 words)
by - written on 27/05/01 (Useful, 51 readings)
Rating:

None of the books that you will ever have read by Terry Pratchett will prepare you for what you are about to read. A very complex book with lots of twists that will keep you guessing till the final page. A deffinate must for those of a scientific bearing. This book will make you think about the possibilities of "P-math". Basically the book is based on a world run by probablility, if something could happen then it probably will. The characters are amongst Pratchetts most diverse. Such as a robot butler that doubles up as an assassin capable of predicting just when the enemy will strike. All in all a very good book that deserves far ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pratchett NOT at his best  (92 words)
by - written on 30/10/00 (Useful, 38 readings)
Rating:

Terry Prattchett is a very good writer and I like his diskworld books a lot. This book is his woeful atempt at science fiction. This book contains talking planets, unlikly robots and green limb transplants. The story is alright and quite funny in places but it really does not live up to the high expectations of Terry Pratchett. If this is your first Terry Pratchett book then please do not give up and never read a diskworld book. This is just a small blip in Pratchett's normally excellent writing. ...  Read the complete review

Great read, a book you cant put down None

Interesting and confident debut The end is a bit tacked on, you need to understand communism to get the most from it

A brilliant exploration of philosophical ideals, memorable characters, funny Very talky (but it's good talky so not really a disadvantage)

great characterisation, clever and witty satirical novel, light relief from the real war not as good as some other Pratchett books

Nice ideas... ...that could have been much better realized.

A brilliant story, brilliantly written, brilliantly formatted, engaging, engrossing, easy to get into - hell, I just meant 'brilliant!' Marvellously surreal! None, really...Hmm, I'm trying to think - no I can't think of any! ..Okay, there are a few typos in the latter half of the book, but Mitchell claims them at the beginning as his 'own handiwork'
