I must admit that I have read many fantasy novels (maybe too many!) and I would say that the really good ones are few and far between. The main problem is that the stories and settings are mostly all the same. There is always a small boy (or girl) of untapped potential, usually an orphan living with cruel stepparents. There is usually a wise old man (ends up being a wizard or something similar) that helps the child discover his/her true power. You also need a great king ruling a mythical land, who is now failing to control the evil forces of darkness that threaten to encroach his realm. As many you may have already guessed if you have looked at my stats, that I am a vampire fan. It is no secret that I love that sort of stuff: weird and wonderful, and it was the reason that I bought this book, I thought it was going to be a vampire story from the title. Although it is not, I was very pleasantly surprised at how addictive this story was. "Daughter of the Blood" is the first in a trilogy called the "The Black Jewels Trilogy". Daughter of the Blood is Anne Bishop's first novel. The first book of The Black Jewels Trilogy. The book is extremely well written it is very different from other fantasy books. I have seen it included in fantasy as well as horror genre. I don't think it is really horror although there is a little violence in the book and some blood sucking demons too. The first thing to realise in this book is how important the hierarchy in the matriarchal society is. At the bottom are the Landens - non-Blood humans (the Blood ar those with magical powers).
