The Day of Creation, J.G. Ballard I'm not sure that Ballard is a "good" writer, in the sense of being a discriminating and careful stylist, avoiding clumsiness and cliche, but his imagery is so relentlessly, tropically, hypnotically vivid/affecting/sick that it doesn't matter. This is typical Ballard, but that isn't a criticism, because typical Ballard is luxuriant growth overwhelming normal life, followed by spectacular decay, seen through the eyes of obsessive/neurotic characters, and he rings the changes on this theme cleverly.
