Advantages: Hilarious wit and humour, great story
Disadvantages: None whatsoever
I bought this book without even reading the blurb, after reading another of Kathy Lette's books which was brilliant (see my other review on How to Kill Your Husband and other handy household hints).
Dead Sexy finds Kit Kinkade, a gorgeous Yank with no respect for women and the biggest ego the world has ever seen, and Shelly Green, a big-knickered, unadventurous and cultured classical guitarist, somehow paired together as the perfect match on the TV show 'Desperate and Dateless'. In order to win huge amounts of money and outstanding rewards, the pair simply has to get hitched and survive on their luxury honeymoon on the paradise island of Réunion. Should be easy enough for the 'perfect pair' shouldn't it?
Yes. That is until Kit's secrecy and lies and Shelly's hate for all men, along with dark and skinny beach babes, an interfering camera crew, and infuriating police chief, a charming entertainment manager, cyclones, terrorists and volcano eruptions all come into the equation. To be quite honest it's hate at first site.
The story follows the completely incompatible pair as they try to work on their marriage with a spouse they know nothing about. While Kit appears not to have a care in the world and seems to be the epicentre of his wife's view of men, Shelly can't help wanting her 3 year long downstairs itch to be scratched and preferably by her hot muscley tanned husband even if she does completely dislike him.
This is such a funny book, I couldn't put it down, and I couldn't stop myself from laughing out loud wherever I was at the time. The views that Lette takes on the war between men and woman are so true and she captures this perfectly in her writing.
A couple of bits from the book which I found funny:
"Many couples divorce for religious reasons. He thinks he's God, and she doesn't."
"Women: Unless crossed, the female of the species tends towards fidelity and constancy.
Men: There are a few species where the male stays faithful until he dies, mostly as a result of being eaten by his partner after mating."
"Men say that women are like cyclones: they're wet when they come and take the house when they go.
Women know better: it's men who are like cyclones: you never know when they're coming, how long they'll stay ... or how many inches you're gonna get."
Sorry, I know that last one's rather rude but I couldn't help it I think it's so funny! The book is filled with witty and comical anecdotes like this and it will have anyone laughing out loud. It's not a girly chick lit book and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, both girls and guys. I can't wait to read her next book that I've got waiting at home.
Published in 2003.
Summary: A simply brilliant author
