Advantages: Quite indepth about her feelings in parts.
Disadvantages: Can skip about in time and who she is addressing.
This is a book that I had quite fancied reading, but was not top of my wish list in these credit crunch times. However having managed to purchase it for the bargain price of £4 I gave in to temptation.
I had seen Dawn speaking about this book and the fact that she had chosen to write her autobiography in the style of letters to family and friends as she did not want to have to record her life in strict chronological order, or dwell on the less interesting parts of her life. I have to say I did not fancy the idea of this style of writing, which is why I have not purchased the book before now (at £4 it seemed worth the price should I not enjoy the book).
I have to say that I was surprised how well her style of writing worked. The book does skip around a bit but does have a nice flow to it. She has chosen in the main to write as though she is telling her Dad, who died when she was 19, the bits of her life she enjoyed while he was still alive and what has happened to her since his death. This does work well as she is quite frank about some events in her life, but perhaps not so indepth on others without leaving you feeling as though you have been cheated and she has not opened up to you.
I have just finished the book and do feel that I have a good perception of what has been important to Dawn in her life, how very much she misses her father but has not allowed this to impact negatively on her life, her deep love for her friends and family and what a support they have been throughout her life.
There is a real sense that this book worked for her as a theraputic exercise and that when she had finished she felt a sense of contentment with life and the place she is in now, which I found quite refreshing.
Summary: Definately worth the £4.
